Shields (unspecified builders)

The Mercantile Navy Lists, which are a major source of information on ships of all types, do not record the name of the shipbuilder, only the town in which the vessel was built. Other sources such as original registration details or Lloyds Register (for vessels over 100grt) must be used to confirm the actual builder.
Also between 1855 and 1870 the Customs & Excise staff who were responsible for formally maintaining the various Tyneside registries, recorded the builder details only as far as the town and not the builder's name. This means that many vessels are simply recorded against North Shields or South Shields as appropriate and for a period, even just Shields. Outside of these dates the exact names of the builders in the following list are as yet unidentified.
